1. Stay together

• Stick with your teammate(s) at all times.
  • Teams that work together get lost less, solve more puzzles, and have more fun!
• Teams whose members separate from each other will be disqualified.

2. Find the way

• Navigate a wilderness trail with maps and puzzles provided ... without parents! 
  • Pay attention to your surroundings. Notice quickly if off course and find the way back.
• Teams that use their parents or GPS for help during competition will be disqualified.

3. Beat the clock

• Reach each checkpoint before time runs out!
  • Teams arriving early at checkpoints may use extra time to rest before the next stage begins.
• Teams that fail to reach a checkpoint within the announced time will be disqualified.

To score

gain Points by solving puzzles

• At each checkpoint, staff will provide maps & puzzles to teams who (1) arrive before the cutoff time and (2) submit their previous maps & puzzles.
• Gain 1 point for every puzzle solved.

Trade points for extra time

• At each checkpoint, teams may arrive no more than 10 minutes late but still receive maps & puzzles needed to continue to the next checkpoint.
• Deduct 1 point for each checkpoint late arrival.

Lose points by littering

• To preserve the environment, teams bring out everything they bring in. No littering.
• Deduct 1 point for each piece of your trash that a staff member must pick up.

1. Is it safe?

• All outdoor activities carry inherent risk. Negotiating these risks is part of the difficulty, learning, and fun of Adventure Challenge.
• Adventure Challenge promotes safety, not by eliminating all risk, but by exposing children to appropriate amounts of risk. Children gain valuable experience assessing, managing, and taking risks for themselves.
• That said, each event has a course-specific hazard mitigation and emergency response plan. Adventure Challenge staff prepare the course in advance, track teams throughout, carry first aid kits, and are ready to respond in case of any emergency.

2. Is it hard?

• Yes, by design. 
• When children attempt something outside their comfort zone—and discover it is in fact within their capabilities—they build confidence and expand their limits. Adventure Challenge provides kids a chance to experience this type of personal growth.

3. What obstacles?

• Teams must overcome difficulties specific to each course:
  • Nangang: ~5km distance with ~200m elevation change, including 3 rope ascents and 1 cliff walk.
  • Beitou: ~6km distance with ~300m elevation change, including 1 rope ascent and 2 cliff walks.
  • Xizhi: ~4km distance with ~400m elevation change, including 1 stream crossing, 3 rope ascents, and 4 cliff walks. 
• All courses feature the common "obstacle" of getting lost. Teams must pay attention, observe their surroundings, and actively navigate to the finish line!

4. What if my child gets lost?

• Each course involves multiple checkpoints. Teams are held at each until everyone is accounted for. Thus, teams may get lost but are never far away.
• Staff track teams throughout the entire event. Any teams not reaching the checkpoint in time will be quickly found.

5. What if my child doesn't complete?

• Not all teams complete. Some will miss cutoff times. Some will voluntarily quit. That's ok. The mere act of starting is already commendable, to undertake something difficult without guarantee of success.
• Teams that do not complete will be escorted by staff to the finish line for snacks until the other teams arrive. Alternatively, children may continue with their parent, should their parent be in the trailing Parent Group.

6. Do I participate as a parent?

• Parents are not required to participate. We only ask parents to drop off and pick up children on time. Of course, Parents are welcome to wait at the finish line to cheer their children as they arrive.
• Parents who are physically fit and comfortable outdoors may opt to join the event's Parent Group for a fee (see Pricing).
• Guided by staff, the Parent Group follows the same trail as the teams but at a distance behind. This option presents a way to be active outdoors, meet like-minded parents, and share your child's experience.
• The Parent Group does not interact with teams during the event. The Parent Group arrives at the finish line after the teams, missing the moment their children finish.

7. What if it rains?

• Adventure Challenge events take place rain or shine. Rain is normal in Taipei and enhances the Adventure Challenge experience. 
• In extreme cases (e.g. a Central Weather Bureau typhoon land warning, 陸上颱風警報), Adventure Challenge reserves the right to cancel events. In such cases, we offer full transfers or refunds.
  
  

8. What should we wear?

• Dress to get dirty. Expect weather, mud, and bugs. Minimize exposed skin. 
• Avoid clothing that obstructs movement, skews balance, blocks vision, catches easily on branches, might accidentally fall as litter, or is valuable.

9. What should we bring?

• Water, health insurance card, and a pencil.
• Optional: Dry clothes and clean footwear to change into afterwards.
• Prohibited: Devices with GPS navigation are not allowed. Compasses (non-GPS) and trackers (non-navigation) are ok.

10. How else can I best prepare my child?

• Set expectations. This will be hard, with a high probability of discomfort and no guarantee of completion. 
• Speak to them about the inherent value of exploration, effort, and growth, regardless of external results.
• Please do not force unwilling children to compete. Adventure Challenge is not for everyone.

11. In what language is this event?

• This is a bilingual event in English and Chinese. Children who speak one or the other are welcome.
• Written instructions (e.g. maps & puzzles) are in both English and Chinese. Teams should have the ability to read and write at least one language.
  
  

12. My child wants to do this but doesn't have a team. How can they sign up?

• For both safety and fun, children never compete in Adventure Challenge events alone, but always in teams.
• Children are welcome to sign up without an existing team. They will be teamed up a week before the event.
  • Teams will be formed by age. The oldest child will be teamed with the youngest; the second oldest, with the second youngest; and so on. If there is an odd number of children without teams, a team of three will be formed.
• You may also email admin@adventurechallenge.tw to inquire about other potential partners. No guarantees but we are happy to make connections where possible.

13. How long is the event?

• Adventure Challenge events take place on select Sundays between 8am-2pm. Exact times will vary.
• After payment confirmation, specific logistics for each event will be shared via LINE and/or Google Docs.

14. How do we get there?

• All events are accessible by THSR, MRT, and bus/car.
• For planning purposes:
  • Beitou 北投: Start/end within 10min drive of Qiyan MRT Station 奇岩捷運站
  • Xizhi 汐止: Start/end within 20min drive of Xizhi Station 汐止火車站
  • Nangang 南港: Start/end within 10min drive of Nangang THSR Station 南港高鐵站
• After payment confirmation, specific logistics for each event will be shared via LINE and/or Google Docs.

15. What is the refund or transfer policy?

• All registrations are final; we are not able to process refunds. 
• Registrations may be transferred, whether from one event to a later event, or from one child to another. Due to insurance, transfers cannot be made within 7 days of an event.
